Tyler Family Assistance Center

About Us

The Tyler Family Assistance Center (TFAC) operates as a ministry of First Baptist Church Tyler. The mission of TFAC is to honor God by providing assistance to the people in our community who have physical, spiritual and emotional needs.

In 2018,  we served over 6,500 families in need. That number represents over 23,000 individuals in our community who were impacted by our efforts. We are only able to do this because of the generous hearts of not only our church members who provide financially, but also the volunteers, largely from First Baptist Church Tyler, and others within our community who dedicate many hours of their time each week to serve our neighbors in need. Over and over again our “neighbors” that we serve tell us they are so thankful for the unique ways in which we minister to them, not only through the meeting of their physical needs, but even more so by spending time with them in prayer and building relationships with them.

TFAC is overseen by a committee of 6 elected members plus a designated seat for the Minister of Missions Robert Watson. Each elected committee member serves a 3 year term on a rotating basis. The TFAC Committee operates under the Missions Committee of First Baptist Church Tyler. A committee-appointed Director oversees the day-to-day operations. The current Director is Joyce Hahn.

TFAC partners with the East Texas Food Bank “ETFB” to procure the majority of our food locally. ETFB is a member of the the Feeding Texas and Feeding America Networks at the state and national levels. All of these organizations are working alongside local partners, like First Baptist Church Tyler, to help meet the hunger needs that so many people experience.

We provide a robust choice pantry with a variety of healthy food options including canned goods, cereal, pasta, meat and fresh produce when available. There is also a small clothes closet, as well as personal care and hygiene items available. Ready-to-eat items are also available for anyone who is homeless or doesn’t have the option to cook the regular pantry goods. We also offer limited financial assistance for Tyler Water Utilities*, medication assistance** and local bus day passes.

*Financial assistance for Tyler Water Utilities is limited to eligible neighbors once every 12 months at the discretion of the appropriate volunteer staff. The past-due water bill must be presented at the time of assistance and the neighbor must be on the account, along with their address matching the service address for them to be eligible.

**Medication assistance is limited to a $25 voucher to Brick Street Pharmacy for the fulfillment of maintenance medications at the discretion of the appropriate volunteer staff. The original prescription or medication showing a refill must be presented at the time of assistance.

As a faith-based organization, we offer spiritual encouragement and prayer. We also assist in making referrals to other agencies as needed. All services and assistance is available in both English and Spanish.

 Thanksgiving Bag distribution

Tyler Family Assistance Center helps host First Baptist Church Tyler’s annual Thanksgiving Bag giveaway. We open our doors to welcome as many as 800 families the third Saturday every November and bless them with a bag filled with everything they need for a traditional thanksgiving meal, including a fresh ham for every family. Bags are filled and collected by 100’s of church and community members in the weeks leading up to the event and then over __(#?)__ of volunteers help make the event itself a success each year. This community ministry has grown each year since it started (?) years ago.
